About intensive

The concept of intensive study has roots in the traditional guru-shishya relationship that shaped yoga's transmission for centuries in India, where a dedicated student would spend sustained time in the direct presence of a teacher, absorbing teachings through immersion rather than brief weekly encounters. Many of the great twentieth-century teachers who brought yoga to the West relied on this model heavily. B.K.S. Iyengar, whose meticulous approach to alignment transformed how the world understands posture, regularly led intensive workshops that drew students from across the globe to Pune, India. K. Pattabhi Jois welcomed devoted practitioners to study Ashtanga at his shala for weeks or months at a stretch, and his son Manju Jois continued that tradition through intensive programs internationally. Even Yogi Bhajan, who introduced Kundalini yoga to the West in the late 1960s, structured much of his teaching around intensive trainings and sadhana retreats that demanded total presence and commitment.

A typical yoga intensive might include multiple practice sessions each day, guided workshops on specific themes such as backbends, pranayama, or the yoga sutras, and time for journaling, discussion, or silent reflection.
