AcroYoga is a dynamic and joyful practice that blends the mindfulness of yoga, the healing wisdom of Thai massage, and the playful athleticism of acrobatics into a single, deeply connective experience. Practiced in pairs or small groups, it invites participants to explore trust, balance, and communication in ways that traditional solo yoga simply cannot. One person — the base — lies on the ground and uses their feet and hands to support their partner, the flyer, who moves through a series of aerial poses and transitions high above. A third role, the spotter, ensures safety for everyone involved. What draws people to AcroYoga again and again is the remarkable combination of physical challenge, laughter, and genuine human connection it creates from the very first session.
AcroYoga as a codified practice was developed in the early 2000s by Jenny Sauer-Klein and Jason Nemer, two American practitioners who formally founded the style in San Francisco in 2003. Drawing on their respective backgrounds in acrobatics, yoga, and bodywork, they created a curriculum that could be taught and shared across communities worldwide. Their vision was rooted in the belief that partner-based movement could foster deeper interpersonal bonds while simultaneously building strength, flexibility, and body awareness. The practice spread rapidly through yoga festivals, workshops, and community gatherings, and today it thrives on every continent as both a recreational pursuit and a serious physical discipline.
A typical AcroYoga session begins with individual warm-ups and partner stretches to open the hips, shoulders, and core. Participants then progress through foundational poses — such as bird and throne — before exploring more adventurous sequences and, in more advanced classes, dynamic flying sequences called solar practices or the deeply restorative lunar flows involving Thai massage techniques. Physically, the practice builds considerable core strength, improves balance and coordination, and increases flexibility throughout the body. Mentally, it cultivates presence, clear communication, and a profound sense of trust between partners. AcroYoga is beautifully suited to curious beginners who enjoy a spirit of play, as well as seasoned yogis and athletes looking for a new physical and social challenge. It requires no prior acrobatic experience — only an open mind and a willingness to both support and be supported. For anyone seeking a practice that nourishes the body, sharpens the mind, and reminds us of the extraordinary things we can achieve together, AcroYoga is an invitation worth accepting.
