Chogye International Zen Center of New York is a serene and welcoming spiritual sanctuary nestled in the heart of Manhattan's East Village neighborhood. Founded within the Korean Zen Buddhist tradition, the center offers a dedicated space for practitioners of all backgrounds to explore meditation, mindfulness, and the timeless teachings of Zen Buddhism. With a perfect five-star rating from its community of practitioners, the center has clearly made a lasting impression on all who walk through its doors.
The center draws from the rich lineage of the Chogye Order, one of Korea's most respected Buddhist traditions, bringing an authentic and grounded approach to Zen practice in the bustling heart of New York City. Whether someone is taking their very first steps into meditation or deepening a long-established practice, the atmosphere here is one of genuine warmth, openness, and acceptance.
Regular sitting meditation sessions, dharma talks, and communal practice opportunities create a rhythmic and supportive structure for those seeking inner stillness amid the energy of urban life. The center welcomes people from all walks of life, regardless of religious background or prior experience with Buddhism.
For anyone in New York City searching for a calm refuge and a meaningful connection to contemplative practice, Chogye International Zen Center of New York offers something genuinely special — a place where ancient wisdom and everyday life meet with grace and intention.
It was a great place to practice Zen. I visited there last Wednesday night. We had a sitting meditation session, and each person had the opportunity to have a private interview with a Dharma teacher and a Zen master. It was truly helpful and accommodating
A small but mighty practicing center in the heart of the east village. Has a strong daily practice, and access to many zen teachers. The head Zen Master lives over in Stuy Town so comes for 515 am morning practice three times a week. There are also 4 other zen teachers. They’re mad spoiled for dharma over here. Saturday mornings at 8 am are the main community practice times, and the kong-an (koan) exchanges with the zen teachers are always fresh and engaging. Come practice!
Solid daily practice. Good teachers.
Great place to study Zen
