Nestled in the lush town of Ubud, Bali, the Ashtanga Yoga Bali Research Center (AYBRC) has been a dedicated home for traditional Ashtanga Yoga practice since its founding in November 2009. The center was established by Anthony "Prem" Carlisi and Heather "Radha" Carlisi, two teachers who together bring over 70 years of combined experience in Ashtanga Yoga, Ayurveda, and Meditation. Their approach is rooted in the traditional method as taught by the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, with whom both teachers had the privilege of studying personally over many years.
What sets AYBRC apart is its deeply individualized approach to teaching. Rather than running a conventional Mysore-style room, Prem and Radha have developed a teaching dynamic that honors the traditional Ashtanga system while adapting to the unique needs of each student's body and mind — a principle drawn from the lineage of Krishnamacharya, Guruji's own teacher. Prem also holds a deep grounding in Ayurveda, having studied for four years under the renowned Dr. Vasant Lad, and integrates Ayurvedic lifestyle principles alongside the physical practice. Radha brings her own expertise in Ayurveda, particularly in the areas of food and nutrition.
The center regularly offers workshops, intensives, and immersion programs. Among its signature offerings is a two-week Ashtanga Yoga Teacher Intensive, which combines asana training with Ayurveda lifestyle modules. Prem is also the author of The Only Way Out Is In, a book exploring the synergy of Ashtanga Yoga, Ayurveda, and Tantra, which serves as both a spiritual memoir and a practical guide for students of these traditions.
Beyond its teaching programs, AYBRC is connected to a meaningful charitable initiative: the Shanti Carlisi Educational Fund, which supports young women from countries including Tibet, Bali, Sri Lanka, and India in studying the ancient Vedic arts of Ashtanga Yoga, Ayurveda, and Meditation. The center's mission is clear — to empower students with genuine tools for health and well-being and send them out as knowledgeable ambassadors of these traditional practices into the wider world.
