Trauma Aware Yoga Workshop for Women

Trauma Aware Yoga Workshop for Women

23 September 2014

By Every Body Yoga

Research has shown that yoga can be very beneficial for overcoming the effects of trauma. Dissociation, or unconsciously ‘leaving your body,’ is a common way of coping with the overwhelming experience of being in a body that has been violated. Being grounded and fully present in your body is necessary for overcoming the psychological effects of trauma. Yoga provides tools for reclaiming your body.

In this workshop you will experience a Trauma Aware Yoga class, including gentle physical movements, breath-work and guided relaxation. There will also be discussion on how yoga can empower you to overcome the impacts of trauma. Most importantly this workshop is about befriending your body and feeling safe in your body. You will also learn some breathing techniques that you can use in your everyday life to calm yourself in triggering situations.

You will be in a safe, women-only, supportive, non-judgemental environment. There will be no physical contact with the yoga teacher or other participants. Your personal space will always be respected. You will be encouraged to avoid pain or strain, and alternative options will be given if a practice is not suitable for you.

Your teacher Prem is an accredited Satyananda Yoga teacher and Trauma Aware Yoga teacher. She is also a survivor of sexual assault, with first-hand experience of the debilitating impacts of trauma and the complex issues faced by survivors. She has taught yoga at the Northern Centre Against Sexual Assault, and is the founder of Every Body Yoga.
