The Body Scan Reset: Release Tension in 10 Minutes

29 March 2026

Tension lives in our bodies long after stressful moments pass. We carry it in our shoulders, jaw, and chest without even realising. A body scan meditation is one of the most effective ways to release this accumulated stress and return to the present moment.

Why Body Scans Work

By systematically bringing awareness to each part of your body, you activate the parasympathetic nervous system—your body's natural relaxation response. This practice helps you notice where you hold tension and gives your mind something concrete to focus on, rather than cycling through worries.

The 10-Minute Practice

1. Get comfortable. Lie down on your back or sit in a supported position. Close your eyes gently.

2. Start at the top. Bring attention to your head and face. Notice any sensations without trying to change them. Spend 30 seconds here.

3. Move down slowly. Progress through your neck, shoulders, arms, and hands. Then continue down your torso, back, hips, legs, and feet. Pause for 30-45 seconds at each region.

4. Notice without judgment. You might feel tingling, warmth, heaviness, or nothing at all—all responses are perfectly normal. There's no 'right way' to feel.

5. End gently. Take three deep breaths and slowly open your eyes.

Try It Now

You have 10 minutes right now. Find a quiet space, lie down, and give this practice a go. Many people feel noticeably more relaxed after their first attempt. The more you practise, the faster you'll learn to release tension on demand.
