Spacious Yoga - Mysore Style Ashtanga

About

Nestled in the heart of Ubud, Bali, Spacious Yoga – Mysore Style Ashtanga is a dedicated Ashtanga shala offering traditional Mysore style practice under the guidance of Iain Grysak, one of a relatively small number of teachers worldwide to hold Level 2 Authorization from the Sharath Yoga Center in Mysore, India. Having been a daily practitioner since 2003 and a direct student of Sharath Jois, Iain brings both depth of experience and a rigorous commitment to the authentic transmission of this practice.

What sets this shala apart is the breadth of understanding Iain brings to a traditional framework. His Ashtanga teaching is enriched by decades of Buddhist meditation practice and serious engagement with embodiment, phenomenology, animism, and systems biology. This means students are not simply learning a physical sequence, but are invited into a more layered exploration of what practice can mean in daily life. The atmosphere is focused and intimate, oriented toward practitioners who are sincere about developing a consistent, self-directed practice.

Regular morning Mysore classes run at the Gayatri shala in Ubud, where both Iain and his colleague Allen are currently teaching. Beyond daily practice, the studio offers specialised multi-week immersion and pranayama courses for those looking to go deeper. The Ashtanga Immersion combines daily Mysore-style asana, led primary series on Fridays, and afternoon sessions focused on bandha, breathing, and the philosophical dimensions of yoga and Buddhist thought. The Pranayama Course offers structured, progressive instruction in ujjayi, viloma breathing, and pranayama — a rare opportunity to develop a formal breathwork practice alongside daily Ashtanga.

Iain has been teaching yoga since 1999 and completed the Advanced B (Fourth Series) under the late Rolf Naujokat in 2014, adding further dimension to his teaching lineage. His writing on Ashtanga philosophy and practice is also available through the studio's website, reflecting a teacher who engages thoughtfully with the tradition beyond the mat. For practitioners based in or visiting Bali, Spacious Yoga in Ubud offers a serious, well-grounded environment in which to develop and sustain a long-term Ashtanga practice.
