Indriya Retreat

About

Tucked away in the Ao Sri Thanu district of Koh Phangan, Thailand, Indriya Retreat is a dedicated meditation and retreat centre offering a calm, structured environment for those looking to slow down and reconnect with themselves. Just a ten-minute walk from the beach, Thai spas, local markets, and national parks, the location strikes a balance between natural seclusion and easy access to the island's everyday life.

At its core, Indriya Retreat is committed to preserving and sharing authentic Buddhist meditation teachings drawn from the monastic traditions of Southeast Asia. The centre's lead teacher, Anthony Markwell — a former Buddhist monk and the founder of Indriya — guides practitioners through in-depth Vipassana meditation programmes, supported by a team of experienced teachers. Retreats are conducted in English and run throughout the year, ranging from intensive multi-week programmes to shorter nine-day residential experiences.

The physical space has been thoughtfully designed to support sustained practice. A spacious meditation hall accommodates up to one hundred people and looks out over a palm grove, creating a setting that encourages focus and stillness. Participants are provided with yoga mats, props, and meditation cushions, so everything needed for practice is at hand. Accommodation consists of eco-bungalows built for two, each equipped with quality mattresses, modern bedding, mosquito nets, ceiling fans, and power outlets — comfortable without being excessive.

Nourishment is taken seriously at Indriya. The dining room serves balanced vegetarian meals twice daily, with a rotating menu that includes fruits, soups, curries, salads, and hot dishes. Cacao and ginger water are offered in the evenings, rounding out a food programme that supports both the body and the demands of intensive inner work. The broader surroundings add further depth to a stay here — the plant-based Indigo Café is a short walk away, and the island's natural parks and healing centres are all within easy reach. For anyone seeking a grounded, practice-focused retreat rooted in genuine tradition rather than wellness trends, Indriya Retreat offers a rare and considered environment.

Wow Wow Wow! If I would have another 5 stars I would give them all! This place is magic!! It completely changed my life!! After years of reading books or listening to podcasts there is really no better way to put every in practice than through this vipassana retreat. You feel the energy of the place as soon as you arrive. Everything is calm and peaceful! Anthony, our teacher is a legend. I don’t think I could have done it without his guidance, wisdom and knowledge. Just come, it will totally change your life and perspective about everything!! Life will feel and flow differently after! Problems or challenges won’t go away but the practice will help you to see them differently, to detach from them, to let go! This will become my annual mental detox! Thank you Indryia team! You’re all so wonderful!! I’m so grateful for this experience 🙏

I’ve been meditating for 9 years now and when I came to the retreat 3 years ago it was actually the first time that I could had some spasm of perhaps wisdom. That was what made me come back this year for a longer retreat. I’m very much grateful for the opportunity and thanks Anthony for make this place true 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 The method that Anthony teaches here brings you to the present moment, with internal and centered focus, dropping the meditator and helping us to really concentrate and be able to understand the Reality. It’s the Mahasi Method that’s been passing through for more than 2500 years now, teaches by the Buddha itself. Although nothing religious but directly spiritual. The place it’s quite comfortable compared to others Vipassana centers, you can get your own hut if there’s less than 30 people attending, bathrooms are clean, the food Aloy mak mak! Very tasty mama Thai food. And the team is so nice that offers thai tea and fruits in the evening, making the place a modern western style Vipassana center. Thank you very much Natasha, Ivan and David, the Indriya team, for such a labor! 💗 PD: These units made incredible friends afterwards 🫂

Anthony is as knowledgeable as the Buddha when it comes to the Dharma. It’s rare to meet someone with this level of wisdom, someone who understands the mind so deeply and can explain such difficult concepts in simple, beautiful English. Don’t think twice — go to him, listen, and change your life.

Anthony, is an absolute gem. He is incredibly grounded, humble, and deeply present. His Dhamma talks were rooted in the Buddha’s teachings, yet expressed in a language that felt completely relevant. He also gave personalised advice for the meditation practices during interviews. The setting is simple and beautiful, nestled in nature with basic yet comfortable accommodation. Everything is clean, thoughtfully arranged, and truly conducive to deep practice. I'm deeply grateful for this experience and I look forward to go back

I just wanted to share my deepest gratitude for the 7-day Vipassana retreat with Anthony and the Indriya team. It was truly an amazing and profound experience. From the tranquil environment to the loving presence of every staff member, everything felt so beautifully taken care of. It allowed me to fully surrender into the practice and go deep within. Thank you so much, Anthony. Your teachings landed deeply, and I’m continuing to study Dhamma thanks to you. And thank you to all the staff and the cook for creating such a sacred and nourishing space. For anyone who feels the nudge, don’t overthink it. Just be there without expectation. 🙏❤️
