Firefly Retreat

About

Nestled in the middle of the rice paddies, just a 25-minute walk from Ubud's main street, Firefly Retreat is a budget-friendly, all-inclusive 7-day yoga immersion designed with solo travelers in mind. Founded by Ariel, who arrived in Bali as a refugee and asylum seeker, the retreat carries a genuine sense of purpose — supporting the local Balinese community through direct employment and cultural preservation, while offering guests a warm and unpretentious place to rest and reconnect.

With only nine rooms accommodating a maximum of 18 guests at a time, Firefly Retreat is intentionally small. Every session begins on Sunday, which means all guests arrive together and move through the week as a group — a simple but effective structure that makes it easy for solo travelers to form real connections. Past guests consistently describe the atmosphere as welcoming and community-oriented, and the retreat has welcomed thousands of happy guests over its nine years of operation.

The week-long program includes twice-daily yoga and meditation sessions suitable for complete beginners — no prior experience or flexibility required. Mornings are grounded in gentle practice, and the broader schedule weaves in a rich selection of hands-on Balinese cultural workshops. Guests learn to make Canang Sari (traditional offerings), prepare Jamu herbal medicine, take part in a Balinese cooking class, and try their hand at organic chocolate making. A guided village excursion or a sound healing session at the Pyramids of Chi rounds out the cultural immersion.

All meals are included — a buffet breakfast plus menu-choice lunch and dinner, all plant-based and vegetarian — alongside a daily fresh coconut and unlimited Balinese coffee, herbal tea, and water. Accommodation is simple and the setting is close to nature, which means geckos and insects are part of the experience. Firefly Retreat is upfront about this: it is not a luxury retreat, but rather a honest, affordable option for travelers seeking cultural depth, genuine community, and a chance to slow down in one of Bali's most beloved towns.
