The Value of Yoga

The Value of Yoga

Yoga can be described as as a diamond with many facets; each facet more illuminating than the last. As the facets are explored so is your self-awareness. Through yoga you will discover your strengths, weaknesses & limitations.

The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit meaning the uniting of the body, mind & soul. In practicing yoga we endeavour to work the body, sharpen the mind & create an inner feeling of peace & tranquillity.

Yoga can help when you are feeling physically unwell or suffering from a certain defect by alleviating pain & improving the condition. Not only does the outer physical body benefit from the stretches & extensions of the postures which strengthen & release tight muscles leaving the skin feeling vibrant, but the inner body benefits too. Because the postures work on specific parts of the body, joints are lubricated & internal organs toned & massaged enabling them to function more effectively & efficiently. The systems of the body are targeted too; the nervous system is soothed & calmed & the glandular system regulated.

After each class the whole body feels energised, oxygenized & is filled with healthy blood. Yet, there is a sense of calmness & relaxation.

On a mental level yoga helps to improve concentration, allowing you not to lose focus of your aims. It helps to keep the mind calm & clear, enabling one to tackle Life's everyday problems. This is achieved through consistent & regular practise when concentration on body alignment & control of the breath generates energy throughout the body.

Yoga is not only about physical and mental health. There is a moral or spiritual facet to it as well. Through its calming influence the ability to listen, understand others and become more tolerant develops. This facet usually develops unconsciously when the intelligence of the mind and the action of the body, work together to reveal a sense of self-awareness. A journey of self-discovery begins.

Yoga teaches the essence of humanity. By improving and bettering ourselves we can improve and better the world we live in.
