"Trauma victims cannot recover until they become familiar with and befriend the sensations in their bodies...In order to change, people need to become aware of their sensations and the way that their bodies interact with the world around them. Physical self-awareness is the first step in releasing the tyranny of the past."

The Body Keeps the Score: brain, mind and body in the healing of trauma.

Facilitated by Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) Facilitator, Trainer, & Social worker, Edwina Kempe, this program is an empirically validated adjunctive treatment for people experiencing PTSD or Complex Trauma who have access to therapy or counselling.

More and more, the body is being acknowledged as a pathway to healing trauma.  Researchers are illuminating the somatic impact of trauma and clinical trials and follow-up qualitative studies have provided the evidence base to demonstrate the efficacy of this model of Trauma Sensitive Yoga in reducing the symptoms of complex trauma and PTSD.

Although TCTSY employs physical forms and movements, the emphasis is not on the external expression or appearance (i.e. doing it "right").  Rather, the focus is on the internal experience of the participant. By focusing on the felt sense of the body to inform choice-making, TCTSY enables participants to restore their connection of mind and body, and cultivate a sense of agency that is compromised as a result of trauma.

Trauma Sensitive Yoga classes help survivors of complex trauma and post-traumatic stress to gently reconnect with their bodies in a safe environment, giving you the opportunity to:

  • learn to be present

  • make choices

  • experience taking effective action

  • sense your environment

  • connect with the body through breath

What to expect in a class/session:

  • NO hands-on assists or adjustments

  • Invitational Language

  • Different options and complete choice over what you do with your body, e.g. option to do part or all of the session in a chair

  • Participants don't have to talk to others

Spaces are limited, to offer the practice in a small group. No previous yoga experience is necessary.
