“The Practice of Yoga Inspired by the Elements”

Asana, Body and the Elements: Creative exploration and Course Planning – earth, water, fire, air and space .
Would you like to understand and experience different ways to incorporate the elements and their qualities into the framework of creative course planning in a way that supports and facilitates positive change for your students?
These sessions will be interactive, designed to incorporate theory, discussion and practical application that allows us as teachers to experience the work contained in the study sessions.
About the Workshops: In traditional belief systems the Elements (earth, water, fire, wind and space) are considered to be fundamental for maintaining harmony within the individual and in the world. Outside of us, the predominance of each element changes continuously, modifying temperature and seasons, and affecting all manner of life and matter. Inside of us, all the elements are present, but the proportions and combinations vary from person to person - we each have a unique combination. Keeping our own Elements in balance is considered to be essential for health and wellbeing.
These workshops on the Elements are designed for yoga teachers and trainees to use the Elements in their course planning to support the bhavana of the class, as well as to support the function of the class they are teaching (e.g. Strength and Flexibility). For teachers working one on one, and for yoga therapists, working with the Elements can most beneficially be tailored to the individual. The Elements can be a powerful tool that, whether you use them symbolically or with a deeper level of understanding, can really enhance your teaching and therapy practice. Over the next few months, we will explore the Elements and their use in different practices: asana, pranayama, pratyahara and meditation.
We begin on March 30th with an Introduction to the Elements with a focus on Asana Saturday 30th 1.30pm – 5.00pm (3hrs):
Introduction to the Elements with Gita Kavar
“Yoga and Ayurveda are often referred to as the sister sciences. I would argue that Ayurveda is the mother of all sciences because it is based on the irrefutable Laws of Nature and a unique understanding of her 5 constituent elements: Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth; the raw materials that all inorganic & organic matter is composed of.”
In this presentation we will explore these 5 great elements or Panchamahabhuta, as they are expressed through the Tridosha: vata, pitta & kapha and their respective sub-doshas, in relation to selected yoga asana. This will help to demonstrate the inherent relationship between these two so-called ancient sister sciences.
Gita Kavar is a Holistic Health Practitioner and Educator who has a unique style of connecting with her clients through an attentive ear and a remarkable ability to hone in on the root cause of their health challenges. Driven by her commitment to educating and empowering others to take ownership of their health and wellbeing, using her extensive training, independent research, but most importantly, her personal direct experience, Gita supports her clients to embrace a “new”...yet ancient way of being using the wisdom of Ayurveda. Gita also offers a popular and comprehensive health promotion and education program where she coaches groups of people in Ayurveda & Cooking.

About the teachers:
Barbara Brian… a long-standing student of TKV Desikachar and the Founder/Director of Agamā Yoga Centre for Health & Healing.
She has been teaching yoga for over 30 years, offering both group and private classes for the young and healthy, and for students in all stages of life. On a one-to-one basis, Barbara offers therapeutic holistic practice for those who need support in coming back into full health and wellbeing.
Barbara trains and mentors Yoga Teachers & Therapists and provides Postgraduate Study opportunities both nationally & internationally and her work is steeped in the teachings of the Krishnamacharya tradition and is guided by her many years tuition with TKV Desikachar
Fiona Hardie is a yoga and vedic chant teacher; one of the senior teachers at Agama; and is currently working with Barbara Brian to become a qualified Teacher Trainer. Fiona did her teacher training at Agama and qualified as a vedic chanting teacher at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandarim (KYM) Chennai, India. Fiona continues to study at both Agama and the KYM. This not only deepens her practice but provides inspiration to her teaching and enables her students to benefit from her close connection to the tradition.
