This course is not just for aspiring teachers but for anyone who wants to deepen his/her practice and understanding of yoga. Allow Lois Nesbitt, voted one of New York City’s Top Five Yoga Teachers by New York magazine, to bring out the teacher within you! As yoga keeps on growing, and students learn more, they are seeking out better teachers who can attend to their individual needs and help them to grow their practices. This training is packed with the wisdom and skills you need to stand out from the crowd. This hands-on course will give you all of the tools to grow into a truly gifted teacher.

You will learn:

  • How to refine your own practice with cutting-edge technique and inspiring, joyful philosophy
  • How to use your voice and your verbal instructions to inspire students to make shifts that can change their lives
  • How to weave yoga’s wisdom into classes that students will remember for a lifetime
  • How to guide students deeply and safely into poses using physical adjustments
  • How to sequence poses so that students can move safely into challenging asanas

The course is packed with great tips on how to practice, why there are so many different styles of yoga, where yoga comes from and why it’s so popular today—all things that will take your understanding and your practice to the next level!

ABOUT LOIS NESBITT

With more than 20 years of practice, teaching, and training teachers, Lois is uniquely prepared to guide you toward practices that will best serve you and your students. Lois Yoga culls the best of the vinyasa (“flow”) yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, and Anusara Yoga traditions into a joyful, intelligent, and inspiring yoga that can adapt to students of all levels and abilities.

Lois began her practice as a teenager in France, and resumed as an adult when she moved to New York City. She studied first at Jivamukti Yoga, then moved on to practice 10 years of Mysore-style Ashtanga Yoga under Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and Eddie Stern. She met John Friend just as he was founding Anusara Yoga, and soon became a leader in the Anusara community, serving on the prestigious Curriculum Committee (which shaped the future of Anusara Yoga Teacher Trainings) and the committee that reviewed teaching videos for teachers seeking certification. Lois holds teaching certificates from Integral Yoga Institute, Yoga Zone, and Anusara Yoga, as well as the highest level of teaching (Experienced-Registered Yoga Teacher) with the Yoga Alliance, the yoga world’s credentialing organization. She also studied two years of rigorous yoga anatomy under master Leslie Kaminoff and thousands of hours of yoga history and philosophy with world-renown scholar Prof. Douglas Brooks.

In addition to her yoga training, Lois holds a B.A. from Harvard and a Ph.D. from Princeton. She credits her fine teachers at these universities for showing her how to make the most complex ideas clear and exciting to students. Her lighthearted approach to life infuses her teaching with playfulness and humor. Indeed, she is unique among yoga teachers in the ease with which she can guide you into tricky poses, map out muscles and bones and what they do, and untangle the threads of India’s vast and varied yoga history.

Lois’ passion is to share all that she knows with the next generation of yoga teachers–that’s why she’s flying 22 hours from home to bring Lois Yoga to you, on her first-ever visit to Australia! Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to train with the best !

Lois’ yoga derives from the great teachers and grand traditions that have shaped her own practice and teaching. Primary among these are:

Vinyasa flow (Jivamukti Yoga)

Ashtanga Yoga (Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and Eddie Stern)

Anusara Yoga (John Friend)

Breath-centered yoga (Desikachar, Viniyoga, Leslie Kaminoff)

Lois’ philosophy draws on the full sweep of yoga history, including early non-dual Vedanta and the Classical Yoga of Patanjali. However, late Tantra provides the ground of her philosophy. Her primary philosophy teacher is Professor Douglas Brooks.

ELEMENTS OF THE TRAINING (EXPLAINED BY LOIS)

ASANA (POSES) TECHNIQUE

ALIGNMENT

I learned much about the best alignment for the body through my intensive study and practice of Anusara yoga, and this technique provides the basis for my own yoga. However, I am letting go of specific aspects of Anusara alignment:

  1. The rigid order of the Anusara principles
  2. Some of the more confusing principles, which I believe need to be reworded and/or clarified (ankle loop, the arm spirals, etc.)
  3. I am changing the starting and ending points of the leg spirals
  4. Some of the languaging, which also confused students

I am creating my own way of re-presenting the principles in order to:

  1. Focus on primary actions that organize the body as a whole
  2. Focus on the interconnectedness of actions—how they generate and support each other in a unified whole

FLOW

I have always practiced vinyasa (flow) yoga, which emphasizes the breath. I want to forefront this more in my teaching, as obsessing over alignment details often led to students forgetting to breathe!

SEQUENCING

I am letting go of Anusara’s rigid template for sequencing, as I have personally found that many different kinds of sequences can be beneficial to the body. I will also discuss yoga systems based on fixed sequences (Ashtanga, Bikram).

YOGA STYLES

A lot of teachers I meet teaches more than one style of yoga. Thus, I think it’s important in Teacher Training to openly discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each style: Ashtanga, Flow, Bikram/Hot Yoga, Iyengar, Anusara . . . . Why and how they are taught and which kinds of students will benefit from each.

YOGA HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY

I believe that yoga practitioners and teachers should know where yoga comes from and why we practice. Thus my trainings include:

  1. Overview of yoga history (timeline of important dates and developments)
  2. Overview of yoga’s main historical schools, those that turned away from the world and those that engaged the world
  3. Storytelling and myths: I have found that the most powerful way to share yoga’s rich ideas is through telling stories drawn from texts like the Bhagavad-Gita, the Ramayana, and others. The colorful pantheon of characters like Ganesh, Krishna, Lakshmi, and Kali bring the teachings to life. Thus, a large part of the philosophy sessions will be devoted to telling stories and sharing what they mean for modern yogis. While well known in India (though often not understood in their deeper meanings), these stories are harder to find elsewhere. I have had the privilege of studying under a world-renown Tantric scholar who understands and interprets these stories.

ANATOMY

Yogis work with their bodies, and it’s important that we all know how they work. However, too many yoga trainings involve memorizing muscles and bones without revealing how they work in our practice on the mat. My anatomy will be directly related to yoga practice, and will cover not only which muscles and bones are used in specific poses, but how things like body proportions, aging, cross-training (other sports), and lifestyle habits shape our bodies. Stuff I wish someone had taught me in the beginning and that I’ve mostly had to figure out on my own!

AYURVEDA

Ayurveda is India’s traditional medicine. But more than that, it is an entire way of living in and viewing the world. Ayurveda is practical—instructing us in how and what to eat, when to rest, when to move, how to treat ourselves and others. My training will discuss specifically how Ayurvedic wisdom will change your yoga, including which postures you do, how long you hold them, which postures are suitable for different seasons, times of day, and phases of life.

KARMA YOGA

Yoga has always had a component of selfless service—of doing good for others without expecting anything in return. However, this rarely gets full attention in yoga trainings. Doing good for others (off the mat!) will be an active and structured part of my training.

TEACHING SKILLS

I’ve learned from the best, and any teacher I train will come away knowing what to say, how to say it, when to do physical adjustments on students, when and how to demonstrate postures. I will also expand beyond what I was taught in three specific areas:

  1. Themes: each class/practice should have a conscious and specific personal/spiritual meaning. I will show students how to discover and develop themes that will inspire them and others.
  2. Sequencing: Very few teachers understand how powerful and creative sequences of poses can be. I’ve spent years exploring which poses to do in which order(s) and want to pass on what I’ve learned with others. (Hint: you don’t have to stay locked into any one formula!)
  3. Modifications: how to adapt poses for students with specific limitations and injuries

SANSKRIT

You don’t need to speak/read Sanskrit to be a good yogi or yoga teacher, but a brief summary of where Sanskrit came from and some important root words is essential.

ETHICS

We’re all human, and our planet is only getting smaller. Becoming more aware of what we do and how it affects other living beings and the very ground we stand on is a huge gift of yoga practice. It’s time we all wake up and start living the lives we believe in and create a world we can share.
