Description

Chronic pain is one of the biggest health burdens in our nation. 1 in 5 people in Australia suffer from this condition, which is classified as pain which continues after 3 months or after an expected healing timeframe of an injury. It costs Australia 34 billion dollars each year including direct healthcare and loss in productivity costs.

Over the last 20 years, rates of musculoskeletal conditions have been steadily increasing. At the same time, rates of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases have been showing a steady decline. Our current treatment techniques surrounding chronic pain are having limited effects at best. Our views on this topic need to change if we are going to make any progress in our management of this condition. Fortunately, recent advances in neuroscience research and brain imaging are giving us hope to improve our understanding and treatment techniques surrounding chronic pain.

In this talk Chris will examine;

- An evidence-based, up to date model of how pain works.
- The latest neuroscience research which shows us that pain really is more complex than we think .
- What changes occur in the body as a result of chronic pain.
- Why we have previously been heading down the wrong path regarding chronic pain management and discuss the most effective techniques and strategies used to combat this disabling condition.
