Week one offers an fascinating introduction to the philosophy of meditation. We will be exploring meditation through the lens of classical texts such as Patanjali's Yoga Sutras to gain a broad insight into the practice, purpose and experience of meditation. We will also discover the philosophical underpinnings of meditation through an exploration of East-West psychology. Why did Eastern psychology give rise to the rich traditions of meditation and how does it differ western approach to mental health? How do we integrate our understanding of both eastern and western psychology? You'll also learn how to practice and teach walking meditations.
Week 2:
BODY & MIND: How are the body and mind connected? How does the body influence the mind and vice versa? Can we even separate the two? Drawing on ancient traditions and modern neuroscience, we will be exploring how to integrate both body and mind in our meditation practice. This session includes learning how to teach mindfulness meditation, mantra meditation and Metta (Loving Kindness) meditation. We will also look at how meditation is connected to the subtle energies of Prana (life force energy) and Chakras (physical energy centres). You'll learn how to harness and channel energy in ways that prepare for and enhance the experience of meditation.
Week 3:
PERSONALISING MEDITATION AND SAFE PRACTICE: There are a LOT of meditation techniques. How do you know which one to use? Meditation works best when it's designed to meet the needs of each student and this session will teach you how to personalise meditation. You'll learn how to teach personalised visualisation meditations and integrate affirmations/intentions and appropriate physical movements. You'll also be exploring the potential dangers of meditation - is mindfulness suitable for everyone? What are the pitfalls? How do you cope with a student in crisis? This workshop will give you the key skills you need to teach meditation safely and effectively.
Week 4:
RELAXATION AND COURSE PLANNING: Relaxation is an important component of meditation and this workshop will teach you simple techniques, including Yoga Nidra, progressive muscle relaxation, guided relaxation and breathing practices, to enhance your students' experience of meditation.
