Who is this course for?

This program is for yoga teachers with a minimum of 350hrs yoga teacher training.  RYT200 certified teachers should apply for the 150hr Introduction to Yoga Therapy, a specialist bridging course that will prepare you for full yoga therapy training.  
 

Where and when does the course run?

The course runs at Adore Yoga's French's Forest Campus and begins on 9 March 2017. The full 650hr Graduate Certificate in Yoga Therapy runs for a minimum of 2 years. However, the course runs on a flexible modular format for self-paced study and you can take up to 5 years to complete. 
 

What accreditation will I receive?

This 650hr professional training is broken into three stages, each offering a different level of certification, from Yoga Alliance RYT500 through to full Yoga Therapist Accreditation with the AAYT. 
 

Flexible Learning

We know it can be challenging to find the time and resources to embark on a major study program. To help you manage the load, we have developed a flexible modular format for the course. You can choose to enrol for: 
 
  • The whole Graduate Certificate (650hrs over 2 years) $7,500 Earlybird
  • One Stage at a time (220hrs each) $2,600 Earlybird
  • One 4-day Module at a time (32 hours each) $790 Earlybird
The 650hr Graduate Certificate program takes a minimum of 2 years to complete. However, you can take up to 5 years to complete the training by taking it module by module. All modules, assignments and practicum must be completed to receive certification. After completing the first introductory module, all modules, except Stage 3, Module 3 (assessment), can be taken in any order.

Stage 1, Module 1

Yoga Therapy Fundamentals (Thurs 9 March - Fri 10 March 2017)
This module lays the foundations for studying therapeutic yoga with an enquiry into the nature of yoga therapy, the attributes of a therapeutic yoga teacher and the traditional ayurvedic framework for healing through yoga. We'll also discover the philosophical foundations of yoga therapy as we explore the therapeutic application of classical yoga texts.

Yoga Psychology Foundations (Sat 11 - Sun 12 March 2017)
This fascinating module explores the yogic view of the mind, comparing Eastern and Western approaches to psychology. Taking the classical yoga texts as our guide, we will discover the fundamental principles of yoga psychology and learn how to apply them to meet the therapeutic needs of individual students. We will also study the integration of mindfulness and the principles of positive psychology into yoga therapy. 

 

Stage 1, Module 2

 

Holistic Counselling in Yoga Therapy  (Thurs 23 - Fri 24 March 2017)
Counselling and communication skills are one of the most important aspects of yoga therapy. In this module you will learn how to build effective therapeutic relationships with your students and develop fundamental communication skills, including empathic listening, the use of silence, unconditional positive regard and conflict management. We will also explore issues of boundaries, ethics, transference and critical thinking, to help you to develop confidence and efficacy as a professional yoga therapist.
 
Yoga Therapy for Mood Disorders  
(Sat 25 - Sun 26 March 2017)
 
This module will give you a solid foundation in the causes, symptoms and treatment of common mood disorders, including anxiety, panic disorders and depression. Learn how to see mood disorders through the yoga lens and apply practical techniques to help students through the recovery process.
 

Stage 1, Module 3

Orthopedic Yoga Therapy 1: The Lower Body (Thurs 27 - Fri 28 April 2017)

Deepen your understanding of functional and dysfunctional anatomy as we examine the musculoskeletal system through the yoga lens. You'll enjoy hands-on exercises that will sharpen your observation skills as you explore functional anatomy, dysfunction and the treatment of the lower body, including lumbar spine, hips, sacro-illiac joint, knees and ankles.

Orthopedic Yoga Therapy 2: The Upper Body (Sat 29 - Sun 30 April 2017)

Our exploration of the human body continues as we take a close look at the functional anatomy, dysfunction and treatment of the upper body, including the thoracic and cervical spine, the shoulder joint, elbows and wrists. By the end of this module you will have a strong understanding of how to assess and treat students with a range of musculoskeletal pain and injury.

 

Stage 1, Module 4

 

Yoga Therapy for Cancer and Pain Management (Thurs 11 - Friday 12 May 2017)
With more and more studies demonstrating the benefits of yoga for cancer patients, this module will show you how to support students with cancer from diagnosis and throughout their treatment process. As well as learning about the medical model of diagnosing and treating cancer, you will discover the ayurvedic and yogic perspective and learn techniques to assist your students at every stage of their journey with cancer. 
 
Yoga for Elderly Students and End of Life Care (Sat 13 - Sun 14  May 2017)
Yoga therapy can help students at every life stage. This module will show you how to adapt your teaching to meet the needs of elderly students and includes techniques for helping students with osteoporosis, limited mobility, dementia and end of life care, including how to support students in a palliative care setting.
 

Stage 1 Assessment and Practicum

Each of the 4 modules in Level 1 has a compulsory homework and assessment component, totalling 50hrs. You will also be required to undertake 50hrs of practicum, practicing and integrating the skills you have learned during the face to face teaching sessions. Level 1 of the Graduate Certificate of Yoga Therapy is Yoga Alliance accredited and upon successful completion you may apply for RYT500 certification.

Stage 2, Module 1

Functional Assessment and Therapeutic Adjusting  (Thurs 8 - Fri 9 June 2017)

Strong observation skills are essential for yoga therapists and this module introduces you to the art of observing dysfunctional patterns of movement and postural alignment. You will learn how to conduct a thorough structural and mobility assessment and how to use your observations to help students repattern dysfunctional physical habits. You'll also get plenty of hands on experience in providing therapeutic adjustments.

Therapeutic Sequencing and Adjusting (Sat 10 - Sun 11 June 2017)

Starting from the ground up, this module will show you where to start when working therapeutically on a 121 basis. You will learn how to set a therapeutic goal, determine which techniques to teach and how to create a sequence to meet the needs of your student. You will also learn the art of subtle touch and adjusting, including the use of props to enhance the effectiveness of the practice.

 

Stage 2, Module 2

 

Yoga Therapy for Neurodegenerative Conditions and Auto-Immune Disease:  Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's, Huntington's, Rhuematoid Arthritis, Lupus, CFS, Fibromyalgia, Chrohns, Coeliac Diseases (Thurs 27 - Fri 28 July 2017)
Recent advances in neuroscience are supporting the principles of yoga therapy as an effective adjunct treatment for diseases such as MS and Parkinson's. This module draws on cutting edge research to offer techniques for working with students at all stages of neurodegenerative diseases. You will learn how to help students maintain mobility, reduce pain, improve neural functioning and create a safe practice environment.
 
Therapeutic Restorative Yoga (Saturday 29 - Sun 30 July 2017)
Restorative yoga is a powerful practice that has profound healing potential. This module will give you a thorough grounding in the philosophy and techniques of restorative yoga and give you the practical propping skills to assist a wide diversity of body-types into appropriate restorative practices.

Personality, Behaviour and Diversity in Yoga Therapy (Thurs 14 - Fri 15 September 2017)
This module explores the practical, theoretical and ethical considerations for yoga therapists working with a diverse range of clients. You will learn key skills for working with students with different abilities and from a variety of cultural backgrounds and diverse value systems. You'll gain insights into how and why students approach their wellbeing in different ways and how you can adapt your approach to have a greater impact on their health outcomes. Encompassing theories of personality and social psychology, this module will help you learn to take an holistic approach to teaching, enabling you to reach a diverse range of students in meaningful ways.
 
Yoga for Asthma and Respiratory Conditions (Saturday 16 September 2017)

A carefully crafted yoga practice can help people with asthma to reduce the number of attacks and improve scores for peak flow rate. In this module you will learn the causes, symptoms and treatment for asthma and discover specialised techniques to help people with asthma take control of their health and make a real difference to their symptoms.

Yoga for Cardiovascular Health (Sunday 17 September 2017)
This module examines the large body of evidence demonstrating the benefits of yoga for students with cardiovascular and respiratory disease. You will explore the anatomy of the cardiovascular system and gain a thorough grounding in the causes, symptoms and treatment of cardiovascular disease. You'll learn important practical and effective techniques for working with students with range of cardiovascular conditions.

Stage 2, Module 4

 

The Professional Yoga Therapist (Thurs 19 - Fri 20 October 2017)
This module will equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to run a successful yoga therapy practice. From ethical business and marketing tools to legal and OHS obligations, you'll learn how to set up and maintain a private yoga therapy practice. Yoga therapists often work in partnership with clinicians and allied health care professionals and this module will help you navigate the Australian healthcare system, become proficient at reading medical information and make and receive referrals within the healthcare system.  
You will also learn vital research skills that will help you develop rigour and discrimination in your own learning process and improve the level of care that you offer to your students.
 


 
Professional Development and Self Care (Saturday 21 October 2017)
Earning accreditation as a yoga therapist is just the start of your journey! Yoga therapists are required to maintain their professional development and this module will explore the role of mentoring and ongoing professional development after you complete your qualification.  Of course, self care is a vital component of every yoga therapist's practice and we will be considering the benefits and logistics of creating a supportive community and daily self-care rituals.
 
Integration and Complex Presentations in Yoga Therapy (Sunday 22 October 2017)
Real human beings often present with a diverse collection of symptoms and co-morbidity. This module is an enquiry into working with students with complex presentations, exploring ways to approach cases that can challenge us personally and professionally. Drawing on the principles of yoga therapy, ethics and best professional practice, we will learn how to manage, and when to refer, students with diverse needs and symptoms. With live case studies to work on, this module is an opportunity to observe senior yoga therapists at work and participate in question and answer sessions as you develop your understanding of working with 'real people'. 

 

Stage 2 Assessment and Practicum
Each of the 4 modules in Level 2 has a compulsory homework and assessment component, totally 50hrs. You will also be required to undertake 50hrs of clinic (seva), practicing and integrating the skills you have learned during the face to face teaching sessions. Successful completion of Level 2 of the Graduate Certificate of Yoga Therapy includes certification as an Adore Yoga Therapeutic Teacher, certifying you to teach and assist in therapeutic yoga classes, private classes, workshops and retreats with Adore Yoga.

The Breath & Meditation in Yoga Therapy (Thurs 22 - Fri 23 March 2018)

In this module you will deepen your understanding of the influence of the breath on the body/mind and explore the use of pranayama and meditation as tools for healing. You will learn how to assess your student's breathing patterns and use the ayurvedic framework to determine most appropriate pranayama and meditation techniques for each individual.

Chanting, Chakras and Energetic Healing (Sat 24 - Sun 25 March 2018)
Sound is a powerful tool for healing. This module demonstrates the role of chanting, mantra and sound in yoga therapy and offers practical techniques to use in a wide variety of applications. This module also explores the chakra system and the energetic role of mudras and nyasa in physical, mental and emotional healing. 
Stage 3, Module 2
 
East-West Nutrition and the Gut-Brain Relationship (Thurs 24 - Fri 25 May 2018)
Nutrition and digestion are central ayurvedic medicine and western nutrition is catching up! This module compares eastern and western views on the relationship between food and brain-body functioning.  As well as exploring the ayurvedic model of nutrition and digestion, you'll learn about cutting edge research on the human micro-biome and how to influence physical and mental health through improving gut function.
 
Ayurvedic Diagnosis and Cleansing (Sat 26 - Sun 27 May 2018)
Cleansing and detoxification are the key to good health, according to ayurveda. In this module we will explore ayurvedic cleansing techniques and even enjoy the opportunity to experience of several detoxing practices. This module also looks at the practical diagnosis tools used in ayurveda and at the end of the module you will confident in conducting hands-on ayurvedic diagnoses and prescribing and teaching key cleansing practices. 
 
Stage 3Module 3
 
Yoga Therapy for Women's Health (Thurs 26 - Fri 27 July 2018)
Yoga therapy offers a wide range of effective tools for helping women manage their health and wellbeing throughout the life stages. This module offers a yoga perspective on disorders of the female reproductive system including endometriosis, fibroids and menstrual irregularities. You will also develop your understanding of the pelvic floor and lean techniques to support women through menopause. 
 
Trauma Aware Yoga & Yoga for Eating Disorders (Sat 28 - Sun 29 July 2018)
Drawing on evidence-based international programs, the first part of this module provides an introduction to working with trauma-affected students. You will discover the causes, symptoms and treatment of trauma and PTSD, along with the principles of trauma aware yoga.  You will learn how to plan, teach and language your classes to meet the needs of people affected by trauma and PTSD. The second part of the module will introduce you to the causes, symptoms and treatment of eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia and binge eating. You will learn how and why yoga helps people with eating disorders to heal and how to adapt your classes to meet their unique needs.
 
Stage 3, Module 4
 
Body-Mind Integration (Thursday 13 September 2018) This module explores current developments in neuroscience and examines how our understanding of the relationship between mind and body is changing. We will look at the the implications of neuroplasticity for body-mind modalities and consider how we can integrate recent scientific findings into our practice as yoga therapists.
 
Integration and Assessment (Fri 14 - Sat 15 September 2018)
In this final module of the Graduate Certificate in Yoga Therapy you will be integrating elements of earlier modules as you work with live case studies under assessment conditions. You will also be presenting the results of research that you have undertaken during your studies and learning from your peers.
 
Stage 3 Assessment and Practicum
Each of the 4 modules in Level 3 has a compulsory homework, research and assessment component, totalling 50hrs. You will also be required to undertake 50hrs of clinic (seva), practicing and integrating the skills you have learned during the face to face teaching sessions. Successful completion of Level 3 of this program will lead to the award of Graduate Certificate of Yoga Therapy, making you eligible to register as a yoga therapist with the Australian Association of Yoga Therapists and the International Association of Yoga Therapists.

Nikola Ellis

Nikola Ellis BA (hons) Dip. Health (Yoga), Dip. Shiatsu, IAYT, AAYT, E-RYT, Level 3 (Yoga Australia)

Founder and Principal Teacher at Adore Yoga, Nikola Ellis has been immersed in yoga for over 20 years. A certified Level 3 teacher (Yoga Australia) and an ERYT500 teacher (Yoga Alliance) and member of the AAYT (Australian Association of Yoga Therapists) and the IAYT (International Association of Yoga Therapists), she has studied yoga, meditation and yoga therapy with leading international teachers including TKV Desikachar, Judith Lasater, Donna Farhi, Ganesh Mohan, and Saraswathi Vasudevan.

For the past decade, Nikola has specialised in yoga therapy and teacher training, using her wealth of experience to bring the philosophy and practice of yoga vividly to life. Nikola honours the principles of Viniyoga, giving every individual student the practice that best meets their specific needs. She is actively engaged with several non-profits, including Yoga Gives Back, Edo & Jo's A Sound Life project, Cancer Council NSW and is the founder of the Pink Yoga project which is dedicated to making yoga freely available to women with cancer. Nikola is currently completing a Masters degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy.
 

Joan Miller


Joan Miller is a senior and talented teacher with over 30 years of experience in yoga teaching and teacher training. Joan takes yoga back to its authentic roots, using the traditional practices of Hatha Yoga to help her students develop spiritual and physical awareness. Certified by over five nationally and internationally recognised bodies, member of Australia’s peak body for Yoga, Yoga Australia and Accredited Journey Therapist, Joan is a highly qualified, compassionate and inspiring Yoga Teacher, Yoga Therapist and Reiki Master.
 

Rosemary Manners


Pharmacist, Naturopath, Nutritionalist,Herbalist, Aromatherapist, Iridologist,Master Practitioner of NeuroLinguistic Programming, Time Line Therapy®, Hypnosis & Pharmacy Owner

Rosemary has been passionate about health since graduating from Sydney University with a Bachelor of Pharmacy 25 years ago. Ten years ago she completed a Diploma of Naturopathy from Nature Care College and since then she has been studying the mind and the decisions we make in relationship to health. This study has included Neurolinguistic programming, Time Line Therapy and Hypnosis. Rosemary is also a trainer in NLP and Time Line Therapy.
 

Sevadevi Glover

Sevadevi is a Senior Yoga and Meditation Teacher with 18 years full time teaching experience. She founded Annandale Yoga in 2012 where she currently teaches and has taught Yoga and Meditation workshops in both Europe and India. She is a founding member of Ayurveda Yoga Australia an organization promoting Ayurveda and yoga that conducted 2 major International conferences in 2006 and 2009 in Sydney.   She completed extensive Teacher Training in 1996 with Yoga in Daily Life and taught philosophy modules as part of their teacher training programme.  Further studies include Exercise Science with Satyananada Yoga. 

 

Rosie Caunt

 

 

 


Rosie is a one of Sydney's most senior yoga teachers and a seasoned yoga teacher trainer. She is a fun loving person and a committed family gal who has been teaching yoga for over 15 years and has been in the classroom for 40 years as a teacher and lecturer. Rosie is passionate about yoga and its tools. She specialises in working in small classes and individual sessions to support people towards wellbeing and affect positive change in their lives. Rosie works with the whole person - mind, body, breath and spirit - using movement, sound, breath and talking.

 

Tracy Gerza

 

Tracy’s love of yoga began with her first class back in 2004 and she is passionate about healing through yoga. Tracy is a self-confessed 'anatomy nut' and she has studied yoga, pilates and anatomy extensively. A graduate of the Qi Yoga 420 hr Teacher Training Diploma, Adore Yoga Therapy 300hr Training and Yin Yoga Teacher Training, Tracy emphasizes steadiness, stability and focus rather than 'perfection', and her students are encouraged to work at their own pace and listen to their bodies for a safe and enjoyable practice. 

 

Brook McCarthy

 

Brook McCarthy is creator of Yoga Reach, an online marketing consultancy and training organisation specifically for wellbeing professionals. She's been teaching yoga and meditation intermittently for 17 years since discovering these at university where she was studying Comparative Religions. Through business coaching, marketing consulting and training, Brook enables yoga and wellbeing professionals to be bold in business by embracing their natural advantages – creativity, self-expression, and compassion. Brook has a background in public relations and communications.
