Description

In yoga we make use of the interconnectedness of the body, breath and mind, to allow a free flow of energy and to meet ourselves devoid of mental disturbances. The word prāṇāyāma consists of two parts: prāṇā, which is our vital life force or energy embodied in the breath, and āyāma which means to stretch or extend, describing the action. In the eight limbs of yogic philosophy, prāṇāyāma is the fourth limb after āsāna (dynamic postural practice, which is the main focus in a typical yoga class). The idea is that through our asana practice we encourage the body to be comfortable to sit, so that we can focus all of our attention on the breath. Our breath then becomes the gateway to working with our prana.

Come and learn some basic yet effective prāṇāyāma techniques. Over the six weeks we will work towards a level of understanding and embodiment of breathing exercises that you can continue in your daily life.  We will deepen our awareness and control of the breath through cooling, slow and calming rhythms, as well as some faster stimulating and heating ones. These are wonderful for settling the nervous system, building physical and mental vitality, increasing lung capacity and aiding digestion. Prāṇāyāma is best practiced in the early morning and encourages a relaxed wakeful state. Each class will finish with a few rounds of sūrya namaskār (sun salutations) to bless and give thanks for the morning.

This class is suitable for those with some previous yoga experience who would like to deepen their practice. The Yoga Sutra says that when we practice prāṇāyāma the veil is gradually drawn away from the mind and there is growing clarity. The asana then becomes our bridge into the day, connecting us with the world of form. What a wonderful practice that I am so excited to share with you.
