CATHERINE HOURIHAN

10-12 Egan St Newtown 2042 Phone: 0411 81 5719 Email: cathyhoo@gmail.com

EDUCA TION:

HSC Parramatta High 1986
BA in Visual Art College of Fine Art, 1990
Diploma in Dance Theatre Art National Art School 1994, Yoga Teacher Certificate with Sadie Nardini 2004 NYC, 2016 Yin Yoga teacher training with Sarah Owen.

BACK GROUND:

Catherine has practiced hatha yoga for over 20 years; she was first introduced to yoga as a way of enhancing her dance training in 1988. She studied Iyengar yoga in Sydney for 10 years, Sivananda yoga in Paris in 1997 and discovered vinyasa, flow yoga in New York City at Jivamukti and Laughing Lotus yoga studios in 1999. She received my certification from master teacher, Sadie Nardini in 2004 and completed an advanced teacher training workshop with Sadie in Feb, 2006. She has also trained in modern, classical and butoh dance. Catherine studied Klien technique for 6 years (classes focus on stretch and alignment) with founder Susan Klien and Barbra Mahlar in NYC and found that this training compliments and profoundly extends my understanding of hatha yoga. Since returning to Sydney Catherine completed a Yin Yoga teacher training with Sarah Owen in 2016 and currently teaches Yin Yoga at Dancing Warrior and Hatha at Redfern Community Centre for Sydney City Council.

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Each class begins with a short meditation to clear the mind, come into the present and focus on breath awareness. The class then proceeds to simple stretches to open the body and further calm the mind. It then moves into a series of flowing sequences that become more challenging depending on the level of the students.

Catherine comes from a dance background and loves to teach classes that flow and usually teaches to music. She embraces the challenge of teaching transitions between asanas as well as the asanas themselves and create sequences that inspire students to go deeper into their practice.

The breath is integrated with each asana and flow is also balanced with stillness. Emphasis is placed on alignment and developing body awareness so that students learn a safe practice. Each class works on building strength, flexibility, balance and stamina with particular focus on building core strength. Catherine encourages an exploratory attitude so that students can cultivate a deeper understanding within their own practice. Catherine has experience teaching kids, adults and seniors.
