Far from her original home in Germany, Angelika arrived in Sydney by pure serendipity while on a journey of self-discovery and world travel.  Having given up a career in computer science to spend some years travelling through the East, she found herself stuck in Singapore with only enough money for the ticket home or a one-way ticket to Australia.  Still in search of her life’s purpose and having heard of the reputation of teachers in Sydney, Angelika followed her interests in yoga and Shiatsu and chose the ticket to Australia.

The decision to take this leap proved to be profoundly life changing.  Here she met her first teacher, Eve Grzybowski, and honed her skills in the healing arts by training in Shiatsu.

Angelika’s experience in yoga draws from over 26 years of practice and 22 years of teaching.  By far the greatest influence for her remains in the ancient words of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, combined with the daily practice of asanas (postures), pranayama (breath work) and meditation.  With this as the groundwork of her daily practice, she finds that the teacher within becomes more and more powerful over the years.

Angelika has had the privilege of learning from some of the masters of modern yoga having studied extensively in India with Sri K Pattabhi Jois and BKS Iyengar.  She counts Graeme Northfield, Dena Kingsberg, Michael de Manincor and Gregor Maehle as some of her most illuminating teachers, with whom she regularly studies.

The Eastern traditions of Buddhism, Shiatsu, macrobiotics and Reiki also inform her practice and teaching, bringing together an integrated healing approach.

Angelika’s passion in teaching lies in her desire to encourage students to gently explore and deepen their practice at their own pace.  Through her clear and precise teaching approach, she aims to inspire her students to create the balance between compassion and challenge in finding their individual practice.  Angelika also leads North Sydney Yoga’s highly personalised education program, including the Study & Practice course and three-year teacher training apprenticeship.  Through the education program at the school, Angelika mentors students in an immersion of the deeper dimensions of yoga through an experiential journey of the practice.

When not teaching or practicing yoga, you’ll find Angelika playing the piano, travelling or indulging in the German tradition of baking and consuming lots of cake.
