About the workshop:

Whatever your level of experience or background, the workshop offers an opportunity to deepen your practice, exploring both the technical and subtle aspects of pranayama, asana and chanting. The workshop also has a philosophy and discussion component, helping to integrate an understanding of spiritual practice within the transformational process of yoga.

Light Source Yoga & Soul Train Yoga are honored to be hosting our teacher, Paul Dallaghan, for this special event. The workshop will be held at the Tanks Arts Centre, a stunning location in the middle of the tropical botanical gardens in Edge Hill, Cairns.

About Paul Dallaghan:

Paul is a senior teacher of Pranayama, Asana and the meditative art and science of Yoga. He has been a dedicated student since the late 1990s of both Sri O.P. Tiwari, one of the few remaining classical yogis and masters of Pranayama, and the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Ashtanga Vinyasa. Both of these great teachers have personally certified Paul in these practices, and he holds a unique position as the only one to receive this double honor.

Paul continues with Mantra practice from the yoga lineage and meditative approaches, influenced by the Thai Forest tradition. His combination of practice and study, through dedication and devotion, has helped him gain some understanding of practice and how to apply this appropriately in Pranayama, Asana, Mantra recitation and Meditation for different level of students he has the privilege to share the teachings with. He continues his studies in health, philosophy, anatomy and physiology.

Paul is also conducting PhD research within the meditative art and science of yoga at Emory University in Atlanta, USA. Basing the investigation on his 20 plus years of direct experience from dedicated practice, in conjunction with modern science, his work will make a unique contribution to our understanding of the effects of yoga practices on the mind and body.

One of Paul’s main gifts is the ability to relate the teachings in a very down-to-earth way for the modern seeker. He can see the funny side of both life and yoga and as a result the discussions and philosophical sessions are lively and humorous, helping to explain the meaning behind the practices and philosophy.

Paul is the happy father of two lovely boys and the founder of Centered Yoga and Samahita Retreat-Yoga Thailand.

Workshop Highlights

Pranayama

Paul will introduce Pranayama to newer students at a very comfortable level so it is manageable and possible to fit into one’s everyday life. For anyone who has touched on the practice, you can expect to have it refined and deeply explained, both from a technical point of view in how to do it correctly and in a philosophical understanding of its place and purpose in one’s internal development, as a direct path to meditation.

Newer students to Pranayama will be able to learn the basics and go home with a base practice. Students with a continuing practice will be assessed and given help to further their practice.

Asana

Paul will also lead Asana sessions. These sessions will be beneficial to anyone with an established Asana practice or one wanting a solid foundation to begin. The key principles of Asana will be refined with special attention to alignment, integrity and energy of the pose within the art of Vinyasa.

From alignment comes the correct grounding and extension, while integrity identifies the correct muscular support. Awareness and proper breathing added to this structure affects the energy that Vinyasa can further effect.

For the last 20 plus years, Paul has dedicated his life to the study and practice of different aspects of the yoga process, including Asana, and for many years studying under the mentorship of the late Sri K Pattabhi Jois in India. His technical understanding of the physical and subtle aspects of Asana allow him to share intelligent insights with all practitioners regardless of style.

Philosophy

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and the Hatha Pradipika will be our main focus, but reference to the other classical texts may be included. These texts contain many of the keys to better understand and perform the practice of Asana and Pranayama and offer insight into the meditative process of yoga.

Also included in the afternoon are discussion sessions with Paul on practice and philosophy, these discussions allow a chance for open questions on all topics including: Pranayama, Asana, the psycho-physiological effects of practice, yoga as a spiritual practice, and how the ancient practices and ideas relate to modern daily life.

Participants

The workshop is appropriate for students at most levels of practice, from beginners with a little experience to students with a committed regular practice. The intention of the workshop is to ground and deepen your current level of understanding and practice.
