In our daily yoga practice, we are confronted with the many layers of struggle that postures can create physically and emotionally. How can we discipline ourselves to channel those conflicts, “energy blocks,” into a healthy focus that moves us to a place of receptivity, ease and openness throughout our being?
By coupling the traditions of Ashtanga yoga and alignment based Vinyasa yoga, we will explore methods for opening the body through approaching some of the most challenging postures of hatha yoga, known as the granthis (or knots, like Kurmasana or Mariciyasana D and deep backbends). By uniting the potent methods of inquiry offered by combining these schools of yoga we will see how to refine our practice, increase it’s power through becoming more subtle, and deeply strengthen in the process. Through this approach, students will come to feel the freedom associated with unraveling the energetic and physical blockages of the body, which results in abiding joy and ease. This variety of practice is beneficial for all levels of practitioners.
In addition to our work with the physical manifestations of the knots, we will delve philosophically into the three main energetic knots of the hatha yoga chakra system, the Brahma Granthi, Vishnu Granthi, and Rudra Granthi.
This retreat will provide a fresh forum to explore the primary and second series of Ashtanga. The more difficult dimensions of the series will be workshopped in detail through creative Vinyasa sequences to directionally open the body and ensure proper biomechanics within the pose. All classes will be led and students can expect chanting, a solid peppering of philosophy throughout, and pranayama practice.

8:00 – 10:00 am Morning sessions will build slowly and consist of internal, meditative
Ashtanga and Vinyasa practice wherein the subtleties of alignment
and breath movement are threaded together on the garland of the practice.
Our journey will involve work linking inner states of deep feeling and emotion
with the physical asana practice to illustrate the power of posture, to free us
from the binding knots of mind and body.

4:00 – 6:00 pm Themes established from the morning will be deepened and continued based
on what is needed, in addition to longer inversion practices, philosophy,
pranayama and chanting.
