We meet the parents at the Backwater Ripples Luxory
Resort, which true to its name is on the Kerelan backwaters
and we sit by the pool and watch the ripples of the
vine-ripe lake. There are these lotus like plants that
inhabit all the water in this area and they have these
pink flowers floating on the top. Amazingly, there are
no roots and they float in all parts of the lake. The
converted rice boat, is laced with bamboo and is a virtual
floating palace complete with AC. The only problem is
that one needs to run the AC at night to mask the sound
of the generator behind the boat. The generator quits
around 4 in the morning and we fine it is much cooler
opening the windows.
The area is like Venice with the only commerce being
possible by boat, as all the houses are sandwiched between
the rivers and the rice fields that flow on for miles.
The children must walk upon the narrow embankment to
go to school as we see them on their way home. We dock
along the bank of the river and seem to be in a community
of rice-boat all spending the night together. Our crew
of 3 cooks us a wonderful Kerelan feast of different
local foods. The next morning as we are passing through
a narrow foot bridge, the captain steers a bit to close
to the bridge support and tears through the bamboo thatched
side of the boat. The remaining 2 hours of the journey
is quite quiet as the crew worries about the effects
of the damage when we return to port.
