8 week Ashtanga Yoga program with John Atyeo. All students are welcome. Whether you are new to yoga or practice regularly, modifications will be offered to allow you to fully experience the practice.
Ashtanga Yoga, as taught in Mysore, India by the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and continued by his grandson Sharath Jois, sits under the umbrella of Hatha yoga. One major difference with Ashtanga yoga compared to other systems, is that it is practiced in a sequential order. Such a system will gradually allow a dedicated student to develop strength, balance and flexibility, and will eventually lead to a vibrant and healthy body and mind.
Ashtanga Yoga uses vinyasa, a linking of breath with movement, shifting the emphasis away from posture and encouraging a practice designed to still the mind through the meditative breath focus. Other fundamentals to the practice are the use of bandhas (locks) and dristi (gaze points), which will be explored throughout the program.
John has been an Ashtanga practitioner for 18 years, and has been guided, challenged and encouraged by some amazing teachers. He hopes to pass on his experience and love of yoga with integrity, authenticity and a lot of joy. As a student and teacher, John considers the study and practice of yoga as a lifelong journey of exploration, awareness, intelligence and surrender.
