A FINE BALANCE - WEEKEND YOGA WORKSHOP WITH TAMAR KELLY
“A bird cannot fly with one wing. In the same way, we need the two wings of practice and renunciation to soar.” -B.K.S. Iyengar
I:12 abhyasa vairagyabhyam tannirodhah
Practice and detachment are the means to still the movements of consciousness. -Sage Patanjali
How can we be fully committed to our practice but not attached to the fruits of that practice? How can we playfully explore our capacity, practicing with vigoUr, lightness and joy while remaining humble, sincere and stable?
Much of our struggles in life and in Yoga is in our propensity to either "over do" or "under do".. Each of us has a unique "recipe" for a pose. The ingredients or primary actions may be the same but the proportions of each individual will be subtly different.
Guruji refers to Yoga as being both an art and a science, he also tells us "be cautious, be bold".
The Sutras speak of the balance of Abhyasa (zealous practice) and Vairagya (not getting attached or fixated on the fruits of our practice).
The Upanishads in turn talk about "The Razors Edge", the fine balance.
As we journey towards a deeper practice we are required more and more to make subtle adjustments, to use discriminative knowledge, study of the self and study of the writings of Yoga to find our unique balance.
In this workshop we will look at key Sutras that can guide us in this discovery and use poses that explore internal and external balance. In this way we may journey towards the true purpose of Yoga: To know the self.
