Description

Autumn is the season which relates to ‘harvest time’ in nature. It's the end of the growing season; time now for turning inward and letting go of the outward-directed energy of summer. Even our bodies store resources as we gather and store energy for the colder months. It is a perfect time to re-organise and analyse, and to be rid of anything that no longer serves us in our lives (unwanted clutter in our homes, as well as out-dated beliefs and habitual thought patterns). During the Autumn Equinox, day and night are of equal length, making it a potent opportunity to clear out any built up toxins in our bodies and minds.

The element related to autumn is metal. The emotions that are associated with metal are grief/sadness/sorrow, as well as loss, separation and letting go. Grief and sadness need not be looked upon as negative emotions – grief has an amazing power to help cleanse and free us after any loss we have experienced in our lives. When this energy is blocked or imbalanced our expression of grief may be inappropriate – it may be excessive and ongoing or there may be an absence of grief or an inability to express sadness.

The major organs that are associated with the season of autumn are the lungs and the large intestine. The lungs are also related to ‘letting go’. The lungs are constantly alternating between drawing in nutrients from the air into the body, assimilating the outer chi with inner chi, and then letting go of waste from the bloodstream. The lungs are the first place in the body where prana/chi from outside the body (in the oxygen we breathe) is assimilated with the prana/chi that is inside the body. The skin is also related to the season of autumn and the lungs –in fact it is sometimes called the ‘third lung’ because of the nature of the skin to absorb what it comes in contact with externally. Skin problems are common in autumn as well as allergies, asthma, and respiratory issues.
