Zen Shiatsu is particularly effective for chronic ailments like headaches, back pain, menstruation, digestion, sleep, and breathing or mobility issues. It provides relief or cure from lingering as well as sudden aches, pains and discomforts anywhere in the body. It is also very effective as a preventative measure against illness.

What is Zen-Shiatsu?

Zen Shiatsu is a form of physical manipulation that was developed in Japan in the 20th Century. Literally, Shiatsu means finger (shi) pressure (atsu) and, in general, it is the stimulation of the body with the hands and fingers, sometimes also with the elbows, knees or feet. This pressure has to be gentle but firm, supportive, and penetrative while being very relaxing.

In this relaxed state, the body's own healing powers are activated. Zen Shiatsu is based on a full Oriental Medical System, which, like Acupuncture, explains the body in terms of a network of meridians through which flows a natural energy called ki. These Meridians are related to organs; disturbances in the meridians will point to problems with a particular organ system.

When the ki-flow is sluggish in one meridian, it inevitably is rapid in another, this being the fundamental concept based on the understanding of Yin and Yang. That is to say it will show a deficiency in one organ and an excess in another (in Japanese kyo and jitsu).

A Zen Shiatsu treatment is holistic and is aiming at the client's physical as well as emotional wellbeing by balancing this disharmony. The practitioner applies pressure on points (tsubos) and follows the meridian lines by way of tonification (giving energy) or sedation (taking energy away).
The benefits are noted even after the very first treatment.

My main ambition is to see a person as an individual - to offer tailor-made treatments. Many factors together form the correct diagnosis for the day whilst an underlying "story" will emerge. I am aiming at re-teaching the body what it was originally supposed to do: be strong and supportive and pain-free.

Nina runs a Zen Shiatsu and Counselling practice in North Sydney.
