The shoulder is one of the main joints in the body and plays many major roles in our every day life. Shoulders also convey countless non-physical messages and symbolize strength, responsibility and the ability to overcome challenges, as can be seen in our common sayings:

“A huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.”
“I carry the weight of the world on my shoulders.”
“Shoulder to cry on.”

To function properly the shoulder joint needs the balance between mobility to move the arms freely and stability to bear weight on the hands. Inherently the shoulder joint is mobile and requires stabilization. However, due to our modern ‘chair’ culture the shoulder girdle often adopts a hunched posture and needs opening or freeing up in yoga practice. In this practical workshop we will cover:

  • The key anatomical structures of the shoulder joint
  • Correct and safe movement patterns of the shoulder
  • Techniques to support the shoulder in asana practice
  • Connection between the shoulders, arms and spine
  • How to use the shoulders to self-manipulate or mobilise the thoracic spine
  • Techniques to realign the shoulder girdle for better posture
  • Alignment tips for active and supported poses

The workshop is designed for everyone, including people with shoulder injuries. Yoga teachers will earn points towards Yoga Australia’s Continuous Professional Development program.
