Description

This course is for Yoga teachers who would like to gain recognised training in the area of Yoga and Breast Cancer.

The training course has been recognised by the AAYT (Australian Association of Yoga Therapists). Completion of this course gives you 34 hours of training, which contributes to meeting certain standards set by the AAYT. Details of which standard are met can be found here.

Cost: Please note that the cost for attending the 2 day workshop is $570. This includes $297 for the two day workshop plus an additional cost to cover the cost of assessment and contact with the course presenter for 6 months after the 2 day workshop.

Course Requirements:

Face to Face:

Two days of face to face teaching on the theory and practice of yoga and breast cancer and 16 contact hours.

Face to face sessions will cover:

• Theory of breast cancer, secondary and primary;

• Theory of yoga in health, in illness and in relation to cancer;

• Effects of treatment for breast cancer-physical, mental, emotional at all its stages, both primary and secondary (including medication);

• How effects of breast cancer can be treated with yoga;

• Research of yoga and breast cancer;

• How to teach women with secondary arm and breast lymphoedema after treatment for breast cancer;

• Contra-indications during treatment;

• Teaching each woman as an individual and assessment of her as well as formation of appropriate health questionnaire;

• Consideration of person as a whole with other health requirements;

• Modifications of practices and postures for different requirements.

• Practical sessions on what has been found effective by research.

• Practical sessions on working with women with different requirements.

This two day workshop is followed by:

6 month period:

Requirements during the 6 month period –

• One month of preparation and teaching to a women who is having or who has had treatment for breast cancer

• Complete an assignment on the theory and practice of breast cancer/yoga plus a reflection on your teaching

• Critique of a research paper on yoga and breast cancer

• Oral presentation of learning from the practical and written assignments.

During the 6 months, you will have contact by internet, email, and phone with the course presenter on your progress, assignments and reflection of performance in the allocated tasks. You will present your learning and reflection on the theory and practice of teaching yoga to women who have had or are having treatment for breast cancer.

This will involve approximately 40 hours of self directed learning and undertaking of practical assessment project during the 6 months.

Please note:

This course is 16 hours of face to face training plus 40 hours of self directed learning. This is equivalent to 34 hours of recognised training with the AAYT.

Assessment is based on:

Practical assignment project on teaching yoga to someone with breast cancer.

Report on project including theory, practical and self-reflection.

Critical review on a research paper on the effect of yoga on breast cancer.

Presentation of practical teaching by video or computer, such as, Skype.

Pre-requisite to be undertake the accredited training:

Qualified and accredited yoga teacher with two years experience of teaching.

Course presenter:

Annette Loudon -

Trained at Yoga for Health Great Britain in 1994, Annette trained specifically to teach Yoga to people with limitations caused by physical disability or illness. Since that time Annette has had extensive experience in teaching yoga to women with breast cancer. She has made a DVD “Yoga for women after breast cancer treatment” through the YWCANSW Encore program. She is currently teaching in Tasmania while completing her Masters degree in “The effect of yoga on women with secondary arm lymphoedema from breast cancer treatment.”
