Yoga in Fiji.

Fiji has usually been associated with activities in and around the water but it is about to become a destination for those who wish to learn or practice the increasingly popular art of Yoga.

Until now the traditional destination for yoga retreats was Bali, with its Buddhist traditions and spirituality . But, for many, Yoga is becoming more flexible (no pun intended) it can be solemn but it can be fun  and can be a part of the explosion in interest in trying different forms of physical exercise.

"I do think there's a trend toward lightening up in the Yoga community" says Kelly McGonigal, editor in chief of the International Journal of Yoga Therapy.

And where better to lighten up than Fiji. It's a country where they love to have fun and see their visitors having fun. And it's this that makes Fiji and Yoga a surprisingly good fit.

At Daku Resort on Fiji's northern island of Vanua Levu they're running fourteen  different Yoga weeks this year with different Australian teachers. Each teacher has a different style. The names of the different techniques may be confusing but what it really means is that can be many things and it can be what you want it to be.

It can be gentle, powerful, spiritual, aerobic or cerebral. It can free your mind and body. It can sometimes seem more like Pilates, sometimes more like a dance studio. Every course is different, but, in essence, it will rejuvenate and stimulate. And where better to have that happen than amongst a people who are as friendly and caring as the Fijians.

Aussie teacher, Pam Badman, from Cronulla is running a course in May and there will be two sessions of 2 hours everyday as she helps participants to find a better balance in their lives and a sense of inner peace.
If it sounds too solemn, it wont be, given a Fijian twist.

Internationally renowned Yoga teacher, Mark Whitwell is also planning to offer courses in Taveuni, in Fiji's North.
Mark  says he didn’t just chose Fiji because of its central position to serve both Australasia and the U.S. but also because " the Fijian attitude of kindness and other- regardedness is a perfect match for everything that Yoga has to offer".
