Ashtanga

Ashtanga ("eight-limbed path"). is a System of Yoga Originally taught in Mysore India by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. The method is based on the Vinyasa System which means linking movement to breath. This process develops internal heat and purification that detoxifies and cleanses the body. Resulting is a light and strong body and a calm mind.

Description

The system is based on a series of asanas which increase in difficulty, allowing students to work at their own pace. The Ashtanga system is based on self practice where the student memorizes the series and progresses slowly, given new postures when he/she is ready. This is called 'Mysore' style and is how it is taught in Mysore India. There is also 'Lead' Ashtanga, which is when a teacher calls out the postures and breaths. Traditionally the practice is a combination of lead and Mysore styles practicing lead on Fridays and Sundays. Ashtanga is a relatively active style of yoga and requires firm dedication. It is important to start slowly and not try to advance to quickly. It is suitable for all ages but was originally taught to young boys as a way to focus their energy and calm their mind. Many people are attracted to Ashtanga as the sequence covers many of the important asanas such as Sun Salutations, Standing Poses, Balancing, Sitting, Twisting, Back Bending and Inversions. One should also focus on the closing sequence as it is very important to balance the more rigorous poses that come before.
