Just wanted to mention a wonderful event that was held on on the 1st of Feb at the Sydney Botanical Gardens. Kate Peterson who helps with Yoga Pass and is a NSW state rep on the YTAA put together a wonderful discussion and lunch to bring the yoga teaching community of Sydney together.
It was a lovely day sitting under a fabulous day, as we came together to talk about interesting subjects related to yoga.
We had 5 questions that we were given to think about and we all discussed them in earnest.
- You often hear that the popularity of yoga has become the new aerobics in Australia...the implication that it is a fitness fad that will pass like the rest. Do you think this is so?
- Abby Ellin in her article in the Sydney Morning Herald last weekend “ Chakra, rattle and roll” posed the question : “Must the road to enlightenment be paved in sincerity? Can only the super-earnest attain spiritual salvation?”
- Osho has said” Ecstasy is the greatest revolution. I repeat it – ecstasy is the greatest revolution. If people become ecstatic, the whole of society will have to change because society is based on misery. If people are blissful you cannot lead them to war; you cannot make them obsessed with money” Is Yoga more than just helping ourselves “feel” a little better. Do we want to create a significant shift in human consciousness and culture—a revolution that can help change the world?
- Are there points of focus or techniques , particular sutras we can use to ease our participant’s minds into the concept that yoga is about bringing this world into a healthier happier space.
- What is your grandest vision for the role of yoga in Australia now and in the future?
The answers all were quite interesting and provoked a deep thought as to what we are all trying to do in the yoga world. How are trying to make changes and increase peoples health happiness and connectedness.
